What is Leading Edge?

Leading Edge is a group of Brown University researchers, together with local engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs, who are developing an oscillating hydrofoil device for harvesting energy from tidal and riverine flows.

Through ARPA-E funding, Leading Edge has successfully tested a 1kW stacked two-foil prototype in summer 2015, and is currently designing and building a tandem design four-foil prototype for testing in summer 2016.

The development of the device prototypes is in collaboration with fluid mechanics research in the School of Engineering at Brown University under Shreyas Mandre (theory and optimization), Kenny Breuer (laboratory flume testing), and Jennifer Franck (computational fluid dynamics).
