Precision measurements in a laboratory flume allow us to test out new geometries and kinematic sequences. Testing in the flume allows us to measure forces experienced by the hydrofoil, as well as velocity fields (using time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry). Furthermore, multiple foils can be tested simultaneously, operating either side by side or in tandem. This capability allos us to test multiple-foil energy harvesting configurations. Fish are introduced into the flume and their response to the moving foils is recorded.
Lastly, by comparing PIV measurements with computational simulations carried out at the same flow conditions, we can validate the CFD which can then be applied for design in conditions that are not accessible to lab-based testing.
