The Volpe Center is providing ARPA-E with program support to evaluate potential environmental challenges and benefits of the Leading Edge Hydrokinetic Energy Harvesting Device. Volpe has identified key environmental concerns and is with the engineering teams to address potential impacts during the device design phases. Volpe will collect environmental data to look at environmental effects of the second prototype device, including underwater acoustics, changes in water currents, sediment transport, and biofouling. The data will be used to assess potential effects of larger scale devices and arrays.
